What’s the Difference Between Cambelts and Wet Belts?

A cambelt, or timing belt, keeps your engine’s camshaft and crankshaft in perfect sync. These are typically dry-running belts located outside the engine. In contrast, a wet belt operates inside the engine, lubricated by engine oil to reduce friction and noise. Wet belts are commonly found in newer engines from manufacturers such as Ford, Peugeot, and Citroen.

Warning Signs and Replacement Intervals

Most manufacturers recommend cambelt replacement every 5 years or 60,000–100,000 miles, but wet belts may have different service intervals. Signs of a worn or failing belt include:

Ticking or rattling noises from the engine
Engine misfires or poor performance
Oil contamination or sludge
Dashboard warning lights

Ignoring these signs can lead to catastrophic engine damage.
